A guide to popular engineering courses and careers.

If you are an engineer who is reading this then I guess you could go down memory lane and arrive at that point in time when you had to decide which branch of engineering to choose.  If you are planning to be an engineer then surely this post is going to give you useful insights in to which engineering domain you should be choosing. Choosing an engineering course is a process actually influenced by myriad factors. There is expectation of parents if one of them is an engineer, and then there is pressure of peers depending upon the choice they are making. Of course industry trends, job opportunities and ease of access also determine what will go in to making your final choice

At the end of the day getting in to the right field is critical because you don’t want to be struggling to change your line after 4 years or drop out in the middle. You will be surprised to know that in a normal class of 70 1st year engineering students 10-12%  drop out after the first year, according to professors from leading engineering colleges in the country. Of course nobody wants to tell names because it is going to bring bad publicity. This number is worrying and for the sake of the student community and parents we do not want it to rise, in fact we want to arrest it.

One way of doing that is to make the right choice at the outset itself. Below you shall find some of the popular engineering courses and wherever possible I have mentioned the career paths as well.

Electrical Engineering

This is not an advanced course for becoming a hi-tech electrician in fact by the end of the final year students will be well versed with understanding complex electric systems and their working. This branch has a focus on thermodynamics, signal processing and instrumentation, systems and electric networks, microelectronics, control systems, communication systems, power systems, electromagnetic systems, electrical machines and power generation techniques.

Various companies such NTPC, SIEMENS, BHEL, ABB CGL employee electrical engineering graduates. According to current industry trends students from this branch command an annual starting salary of 4 to 4.5 lakhs per annum. This figure can vary greatly depending upon the institute.

Computer Science Engineering

Well I am sure many of you would be aware that this is one of the most lucrative and competitive branch and will be for some time to come. With India’s information technology sector achieving great heights in the last decade, this branch of engineering has seen many takers. As long as we remain a developing nation and our costs are lesser there will always be a scope of superb employment for computer science engineering graduates.

This branch focuses on basic computer science topics such as programming, data structures, digital logic, computer networks, operating systems, web technologies, databases and computer architecture to name a few. Both private and government organizations offer jobs to this category of engineers. The most popular are Wipro, TCS, Infosys, Google, IBM, Facebook, DRDO and ISRO. The salary range is between 5 and 12 lakhs per year.

Electronics and Communication Engineering

Wouldn’t you love to be working in a chip manufacturing utility making hi-tech designs and changing the world well your dream can come true if you choose ECE branch. This branch is also hugely popular amongst engineering aspirants. The focus area is on subjects like logic design, digital electronics, electronic circuits, signal systems, very large scale integrations, control systems and computer hardware.

Job opportunities are a galore; most electronic devices need a software interface to run on there is tremendous scope for innovation. This branch also promotes a lot of research and development in the areas of digital electronics, chip design and logical circuits. Top companies are Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Nokia, IBM etc. Salary range is 4 to 7 lakhs per annum.

Chemical engineering

Though this not such a hot branch of engineering but in the future its application is going to be really sought after. After all we all want a greener and cleaner environment and a major contributing factor to achieving this wish is the development of clean and renewable energy in which chemical engineering will play a very large role. Students will study about fluid mechanics, chemical thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, surface science, catalysis and reaction engineering. They will be exposed to research in polymers, pharmaceuticals and chemical engineering purposes.

There is plenty of room to go to the Middle East to work for companies like Shell and Aramco. Of course, there are also many Indian companies  like ONGC, Reliance Industries Limited, Essar Oil, etc. A chemical engineering graduate can start with a salary of 4 to 6 lakh per year.

Mechanical Engineering

One can safely say that this branch of engineering is the broadest in terms of its wide application in the areas of manufacturing plants, vehicles, ships, robots, heating and cooling systems, aircrafts, medical devices etc. This is the oldest branch of engineering and 99% of all engineering colleges offer this field. Students are exposed to specialized subjects like mechanics, kinematics, fluid mechanics thermodynamics, heat transfer, materials science, energy conservation etc.

The kind of companies that recruit students of this branch of engineering are TATA motors, General Motors, ISRO, DRDO, Ashok Leyland etc. Salary packages are competitive and start at 3 lakhs per annum.

Civil Engineering

This branch of engineering has huge scope in both developing and developed countries because of the constant needs of a growing population in terms of housing and infrastructure requirements. Other than basic engineering subjects the students will study fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, soil mechanics, engineering design etc. There is also scope of higher studies and becoming a sought after consultant to big infrastructure companies such as Gammon India, Larsen and Turbo, DLF etc.
